The San Diego moving calendar: when to book and what it costs you not to
Turnover weekends, PCS season, the last Friday of the month, and the six weeks of the year when every truck in the county is spoken for.
Moving demand is not spread evenly across the year, and in San Diego it is less even than most places. Knowing which weeks are contested is worth more than any discount code, because availability, not price, is what usually determines whether your move goes well.
The shape of the year
Roughly seventy percent of household moves nationally happen between May and September. San Diego follows that curve and adds two local spikes on top of it.
- Late August and the first week of September. Student turnover in Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and the College Area. Leases end and begin on the same weekend and the alleys fill with trucks.
- June and July. Permanent change of station season around Camp Pendleton and the naval bases. Orders do not bend to suit movers, so these weeks get booked by people who genuinely cannot move them.
Layer on the universal pattern that leases and closings cluster at month end, and you get the busiest slot in the industry: the last Friday and Saturday of a summer month. If you can avoid that window you will get a better crew, more flexibility and a calmer day.
How far ahead to book
- October to April: three weeks is comfortable, two is usually workable.
- May to September: six to eight weeks.
- Student turnover weekend in PB: book in July. Crews there are gone by early August.
- Any move needing a freight lift: book the lift first, then the mover. The building is the constraint, not us.
The mid-month weekday trick
A Tuesday in the middle of the month is the easiest day of the year to move. Traffic is lighter, lifts are free, parking is achievable, and crews are not coming off their fourth consecutive twelve-hour day. If your dates have any flexibility at all, spend it here rather than on trying to negotiate the rate.
San Diego specifics worth planning around
Heat inland
East County and Chula Vista pass ninety-five degrees on summer afternoons and East County regularly passes a hundred. From June through September we start those moves at seven in the morning. A crew that begins at eleven will be slower by two, and you are paying by the hour.
Beach parking
Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Ocean Beach have almost no off-street loading. A temporary no-parking posting through the city takes several days to arrange and is comfortably worth the effort. Two reserved kerbside spaces frequently eliminate a long-carry fee entirely.
HOA and tower paperwork
Downtown, Little Italy and much of La Jolla require a certificate of insurance naming the association before a lift can be booked. Allow three business days on our side and often longer on theirs. This is the single most common reason a confirmed move date has to slip.
The short version
Pick a mid-month weekday if you can. Book eight weeks out if you are moving in summer. Sort the building paperwork before you sort anything else. And if you are moving out of a PB beach block over turnover weekend, accept now that it will take longer than the estimate says, and start at seven.
